In most cases, yes and for good reason. If a wall is suspected to be load bearing, it’s essential to seek professional advice rather than relying solely on a builder (with full respect to their skills). Confirming whether a wall is load bearing often requires investigative work, such as lifting floorboards or removing ceiling plaster to understand how the structure has been built. If the wall is load bearing, you’ll typically need a supporting beam and/or columns installed. In addition, your builder will need to notify the Local Authority and submit a Building Regulations application, which requires structural calculations and drawings prepared by a qualified structural engineer. In short, involving a structural engineer ensures safety, compliance, and a smooth project from start to finish.
A Structural Engineer’s Report is a detailed, professional assessment of a property’s structural strength, safety, and overall stability. It focuses on the key elements that form the building’s “skeleton,” including the foundations, load-bearing walls, roof structure, and other critical components that support the home.
